Operation Ice Breaker Targets The Gam(bl)ing Industry Right Before It's Biggest Gathering

Security Joes has identified a new threat actor targeting the gambling and gaming industry, and is trying to track its maker online, in order to block the campaign before the ICE London conference in 2023.

Posing as a security software vendor, the threat actor is contacting gaming companies with offers to sell anti-hacking tools and claiming that they can prevent cyberattackers from stealing game player data and "hijacking their accounts" on gambling websites. however, the fake vendor says that their services are only available to one particular country.

The scheme is a common one and used by many threat actors. The threat actors tend to buy compromised email accounts from cyber criminal syndicates to register domains and set up the fake website. In this case, the website looks almost legitimate, according to Security Joes analysts who examined the website.

"The scammer builds a business centered around offering protection against hackers stealing your data, but only if you sign up with them," said Igal Zeifman, VP of Product Management at Security Joes. "From there they can either steal money directly or sell your personal or game player data to other criminals in exchange for money.
