Water Utilities

The America’s Water Infrastructure Act (AWIA) deadlines for risk assessments have passed!  Outsource your risk assessment to avoid EPA fines.

  • March 31, 2020 if serving ≥100,000 people.
  • December 31, 2020 if serving 50,000 to 99,999 people.
  • June 30, 2021 if serving 3,301 to 49,999 people.

Cyber Risk Analysis Group  (CRAG) conducts cybersecurity risk assessments mapped to AWIA requirements with recommendations for mitigating the risks identified.

AWIA Emergency Response Plans

AWIA requires utilities to complete an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) six months after their risk assessment.

  • Cybersecurity risks and responses must be address by the ERP
  • The ERP must cover resilience strategies, detection strategies, and mitigation actions.

When addressing cybersecurity risks, ensure your consultant uses an Incident Response Plan developed specifically for cybersecurity risks, instead of a general ERP template.

AWIA Ongoing Compliance

The EPA recommends that water utilities follow AWWA cybersecurity guidance for ongoing compliance with AWIA.

  • The AWWA publishes recommended cybersecurity practices for 14 practice categories.
  • These categories cover both operations technology (OT) and information technology (IT).

The categories range from basic cybersecurity measures such as endpoint hardening to more advanced cybersecurity measures such as process engineering.  CRAG provides these services to match your utility’s requirements.  For more information, read our white paper in AWIA.
